Product Description

STARSE GP Shunt Screen

Application

Sandstone formations are susceptible to collapse, and localized abnormal losses can lead to the accumulation of GP particles, blocking the flow paths. Additionally, the extended length of the wellbore and the challenge in controlling wellbore quality elevate the risks associated with gravel packing operations.
In cases of partial wellbore collapse, the gravel particles used for GP can continue to penetrate into the collapsed section through special bypass channels established by the bypass gravel packing screen. This solution addresses incomplete gravel packing after the formation of localized gravel blockage and enhances gravel packing density in horizontal wells and long wellbore sections, thereby improving the overall quality of gravel packing.

Structure

The STARSE GP Shunt Screen features multiple evenly distributed bypass tubes, each pre-equipped with several openings facing the annulus. In cases of partial formation collapse or gravel blockage that obstructs the traditional annulus gravel packing pathway, these bypass tubes serve as alternative flow channels for the mortar (sand-carrying fluid) to circumvent the blocked annulus.
During gravel packing operations, should the annulus collapse and create a blockage, the mortar can enter the bypass tubes through their adjacent openings and proceed downward. As it traverses each bypass tube, part of the mortar exits through its openings to perform conventional outer annulus packing within the smaller sections obscured by sand bridges, while the remaining mortar continues its flow towards the bypass tube of the next screen. This sequence continues, with the mortar being sequentially transmitted downward until the entire section of the completion string undergoes complete gravel packing and sand control. Importantly, all bypass tubes are positioned within the screen, rendering them impervious to the impact of annulus wellbore wall collapses.

Pre-packed screen pipe                                 Metal mesh screen pipe
The STARSE GP Shunt Screen features three Particle transmission channels and two Gravel packing channels for every bypass screen segment, evenly spaced along the entire length of the screen. This design promotes highly efficient gravel packing, ultimately boosting operational reliability and prolonging the lifespan of the well completion. The transmission channels are primarily tasked with the vertical conveyance of packing particles, whereas the Gravel packing channels focus on completing the packing at the current stratigraphic horizon, each equipped with three strategically placed packing ports.

Features

  • The screen pipe is composed of a coupling flow channel system, bypass transfer conduits, bypass packing conduits, and a combined filter assembly, among others.
  • The outer layer features a precision-punched and slotted sleeve with lateral apertures, serving dual functions as both an outer protective casing and providing initial filtration, facilitating the formation of a sand bridge outside the screen pipe.
  • The bypass transfer conduits enhance efficient gravel transmission, while the bypass packing conduits ensure gravel packing at the current location, safeguarding against sand control failure due to formation collapse and providing a packing pathway beyond obstructed sections.
  • The filter medium can be a combined filter mesh or pre-packed particles, tailored to suit various oil and gas reservoirs.
  • Bypass screen pipes are suitable for gravel packing completions in extended well intervals.
  • Higher sand ratios can be achieved with bypass screen pipes, reducing pumping duration.
  • They offer robust resistance to damage, high reliability in sand control, and user-friendly construction.
  • Installation is effortless, adopting the same method as for standard casing and screen pipe deployment, eliminating the need for additional equipment.
