Description

SASP Swellable Packer is a patented tool researched and designed based on the rubber swelling performance, where the rubber will be automatic swelling in the condition of oil, water or hybrid liquid to realize annulus sealing. It could be used in open hole and cased hole cementing or completion, to assist in cementing, water/mud zone isolation or poor physical property zone isolation, which can realize zonal isolation or zonal production. It's a kind of simpler, safer and much reliable down hole tool.

Design Principle

The SASP packer is mainly made from polymer and elastic material, the polymer will be swelled by absorbing water or oil molecule of the liquid, which will make the elastic material swelling in place. The swell packer made by STARSE will be swelled to 2 times of original size by absorbing the hydrocarbon in the oil and gas wells, realizing annulus sealing.
In order to avoid the swell packer starting to expand before operation completed, retardant materials are added into the base rubber, which will give 3 days or as required (by client) for safety opertion.
The clamp at both ends of SASP are very important parts which influence the performance of the packer. It stops the rubber swelling along the axis, and increases the differential pressure capability, and at the same time prevent the packer from damage during RIH.


 

Classification of Swellable Packer

The SASP packers are divided into 3 types on the basis of the rubber features:
SASP Oil-swellable packer is used in oil well or OBM well conditions. The oil swelling rubber will be expanded due to the interaction of the rubber polymer and hydrocarbon, and will cause the elastic material swelling. The whole process is irreversible, the swelled rubber will not varies by the change of the wellbore fluid. The performance of the Oil-swellable packerwill be influenced by the viscosity of the swelling medium and formation temperature. Relevant information shall be provided by client.
SASP Water-swellable packer is used in water or WBM well condition. The rubber realizes self-swelling by utilizing water permeation principle. The swelling performance of the rubber will be influenced by the salt content in the base rubber and swelling media. The base rubber will be expanded by absorbing water which will cause the elastic material swelling. The swelling process is reversible because of utilizing the permeation principle, the swelling performance varies by the change of the formation fluid. The performance of the Water-swellable packer will be influenced by the salinity of swelling medium and formation temperature, and the information shall be provided by client.
SASP Hybrid Swellable Packer could be used in oil, water or hybrid fluid well condition. The rubber combines Oil-swellable Rubber and Water-swellable Rubber performances, and the working principle is the same as the above two packers. Reservoir information such as formation water or swelling medium shall be provided by client.

Water-swellable rubber
  • The higher the temperature, the faster the expansion speed.
  • The thicker the rubber cylinder, the better the expansion effect;
  • The longer the rubber length, the better the sealing effect;
  • Expansion time 1-3 weeks;
  • The higher the salinity, the slower the expansion speed;
  • Water or water-based mud.
Oil-swellable rubber
  • The higher the temperature, the faster the expansion speed.
  • The thicker the rubber cylinder, the better the expansion effect;
  • The longer the rubber length, the better the sealing effect;
  • Expansion time 1-3 weeks;
  • The higher the viscosity of crude oil, the slower the expansion speed.
